One of the three adults charged in a drive-by shooting in Gray this summer pled guilty in Jones County Superior Court last week and received five years to serve in prison.

Vindarious Glover was sentenced by Superior Court Judge Hulane George Oct. 26. He was sentenced to 20 years each on three counts of aggravated assault, 10 years each on two counts of criminal damage to property in the first degree and count six (carrying weapons within school safety zones). All six counts are to run concurrent for a total of 20 years, and after he has served five years, the remainder of his sentence may be served on probation.

According to a story in The Jones County News, the drive-by shooting took place June 8 on Maggie Califf Street near the Ninth Grade Academy.

Gray Police Chief Adam Lowe said the shooting started about 10 p.m. Police were alerted when a mother reported that her 2001 Explorer had been shot while she was traveling on Maggie Califf headed toward Highview. Her young son was strapped into the back seat on the passenger side near where the bullets hit the outside of the car, and her daughter was in the front passenger seat.

Lowe said the investigation of the incident began immediately, and officers began by checking the scene and talking to neighbors. A break in the case came the next day when the police department received a call with information about the identities of the youths involved. A total of 14 warrants were issued in the case.

Lowe said juveniles in Gray started calling the juveniles in Macon and challenging them to fight. The two groups came together at the school, and the Explorer driven by the mother was mistaken for another containing the juveniles.

Weapons used in the shooting were a revolver and a .380 pistol. An AK-47 was reported at the scene but was not used. Lowe said two juveniles from Gray are being charged with conspiracy to commit aggravated assault.

The chief said the shooting was the result of continuing issues between the two groups that were going on during the school year.
