The Jones County Sheriff’s Department released information Tuesday morning about that escape of an inmate who was being transported to Jackson State Prison.

Chief Deputy Barbara Burnette stated in a 10 a.m. press release Feb. 11, that Michael Shane Upshaw Jr., a white male, 5 feet six inches tall, weighing approximately 140 pounds escaped from custody at the Jackson exit, 201 off I-75 in Butts County.

Upshaw was being transported from the Jones County Jail to Jackson State Prison. Burnette said the escapee may have taken off his orange inmate jump suit and may be wearing a grey sweatshirt and grey sweatpants that have been cut off into shorts.

She said Upshaw’s original charge was burglary and the chief requested anyone coming in contact with the inmate to please notify the Jones County Sheriff's Office at 478-986-3489 or Butts County Sheriff's Office.
