Mayor Gus Wilson read a proclamation to several members of the Jones County Cruisers Friday morning recognizing them on Collector Car Appreciation Day in Gray.

The U.S. Senate approved the day of appreciation a few years ago in recognition of the long history of the automobile and the industry’s importance to the economic progress of the United States, and to recognize those who collect and restore historic vehicles for fun and to preserve the nation’s history and heritage.

Tim Stewart, president of the Jones County Cruisers, brought the day to Wilson’s attention and asked for the local proclamation. The Cruisers were formed three years ago to help stage the Daylily Festival Car Show to help draw more people to the annual event. Since then, the club has grown to more than 250 members, and the group hosts several benefit car shows each year, plus collects toys to give to needy children at Christmas.

Club meetings are held the first Tuesday of the month at Agave Azul Mexican Restaurant, and a monthly drive-in meeting is held on third Tuesdays at Sonic in Gray where members may bring the cars, trucks and motorcycles they have restored to show to each other and to visitors. Both meetings begin at 7 p.m.

A couple of upcoming special events for the club will be a special drive-in at Sonic at 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 22, to raise money for a local cancer patient, and a concert and back-to-school supplies fund-raiser at Agave Azul featuring George Skinner and his Last Call band at 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 28.
