At the eve of his trial for child molestation, a Jones County man pled guilty to his charges and will be spending the next 25 years in prison.

Lorenzo Dwaine Lockhart was sentenced to a total of 40 years with 25 years to serve by Chief Superior Court Judge William Prior April 23. A jury had been picked for the trial and pretrial motions ready to be heard when the defendant decided to plead guilty.

Assistant District Attorney Keagan Waystack prosecuted the case for the state. She said the pretrial motion that was about to be heard when Lockhart pled concerned a confession he gave to law enforcement upon his arrest.

The defendant was arrested Aug. 16, 2012, on charges of child molestation, incest, statutory rape, and aggravated child molestation and was indicted by a grand jury Dec. 3, 2012.

Lockhart was represented by public defender Sean Brodie.

“Mr. Lockhart was asking for the confession to be suppressed. He was kept at the courthouse after the jury was picked because of the hearing on the motion. Before the motion began, he told his attorney he wanted to plea,” Waystack said.
