After being dominated by Gray Station for years, the Clifton Ridge Lady Cougars took a 5-4 victory over the Lady Hounds Monday in their first regular season matchup this year. The game was shortened to five innings due to rain.
The two teams met a week ago in a preseason tournament, and Gray Station won 11-1. But this time Clifton Ridge took advantage of some Lady Hound errors and added a few timely hits and aggressive base-running to secure the victory.
The two teams meet again on Sept. 20.
“Sometimes the softball gods are in your favor, and they were this day,” Clifton Ridge coach Rebecca Busbee said. “We knew that the weather was coming in and were hoping that it would hold off long enough to get the game in. However, the rain didn’t hold off, but we were able to get the game through the fifth inning, making it a complete game.”
Gray Station jumped ahead with three runs in the top of the first with a couple of singles, two walks, four stolen bases, a sacrifice fly and a Clifton Ridge error.
