GRAY: Cmdr. George Albert Sheffield Jr., U.S. Navy retired, 81, went to be with Jesus, Thursday, Aug. 8, 2013, after an extended illness. The family greeted friends Sunday, Aug. 11, from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m., at Bridges Funeral Home in Gray. Funeral services, with full military honors, were held Monday, Aug. 12, at 11:00 a.m., at Real Life Church in Macon, with interment at Cedar Ridge Cemetery in Gray. The Revs. Bo Turner and Ron Watson officiated.

Cmdr. Sheffield was born March 11, 1932, in Empire, Dodge County, and had lived in Gray for the past 28 years. He was the son of the late George A. Sheffield Sr. and the late Susie Mae Law. Mr. Sheffield was a retired naval officer with 38 years of military service to his country who served as commanding officer on several ships. He was a veteran of the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He also recently retired from a career operating his own lawn care service. Mr. Sheffield was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was also a devoted Christian who loved his Lord and Savior Jesus. In addition to teaching Bible classes, he served as head greeter at Real Life Church and maintained the church’s lawn care for many years.

Mr. Sheffield is survived by his wife of 38 years, Virginia “Virgie” Sheffield of Gray; son, George M. Sheffield of Gray; daughter, Monet Sheffield of Stone Mountain; daughter, Melissa Sheffield of Seattle, Wash.; son and daughter-in-law, Willie and Regina Dia of Birmingham, Ala.; and daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy and David Knuth of Douglasville; grandson, George M. Sheffield Jr. of Hampton; grandson and wife, Trey and Sheena Sheffield of Gray; granddaughter, Monica Voskuil of Warner Robins; granddaughter, Jenna Sheffield of Seattle, Wash.; grandson, Dakota Sheffield of Seattle, Wash.; granddaughter, Emily Dia; and grandsons, Joshua and Noah Dia of Birmingham, Ala.; great-grandchildren, Spencer Voskuil and Christina Sheffield; sister, Mary Turner of Gray; brother and sister-in-law, Billy and Martha Burgamy of Eatonton; sister and brother-in-law, Merle and Jim Mitchum of Forsyth; and many extended family relations; and his beloved Yorkies, Noah, Job and Eli.

Mr. Sheffield was preceded in death by sister, Dorothy Goolsby; sister and brother-in-law, Shelby and Gerald Parrish; stepfather, Harry Burgamy; and brother-in-law, Edward Turner.
