Jones County’s road paving priority list was the topic for a work session last week with seven roads already surveyed.

Board of Commissioners Chairman Preston Hawkins started the meeting explaining that he came up with 11 roads for the priority list. The issue with the list is acquiring the rights of way that are needed before the roads can be paved.

The board set criteria for the process of surveying and obtaining rights of way for roads to be paved at their Aug. 20 meeting. It was agreed that 80 percent of the property owners need to sign a petition agreeing to give the county the needed right of way before the county would survey the road.

Board members also agreed that the county would put back any fences that are taken down during the paving process.

Commissioner Larry Childs said board members need to decide what they are going to do with roads that have been surveyed but do not have the rights of way. He asked about McKay Road, and County Administrator Mike Underwood said a low percentage of rights of way along McKay Road have been obtained.

“We need to decide if we are willing to condemn the land on the roads we have surveyed,” Childs said.
