Mayor Gus Wilson changed the order of business for the June 17 committee meeting to allow Fire Chief Max Wood the opportunity to attend his next meeting of the evening at the fire station.
Wood asked the council members to allow a change in Gray’s cadet program. He wants to charter an Explorer Post through the Boy Scouts of America. The program would allow youths, boys and girls, ages 16-18 to have fire safety training and serve as support for the volunteer firefighters.
The chief said the program can be marketed through the school and would cost the city $20 a year for an application fee. He explained one of the benefits of the program is the opportunity of mentoring youths who may become volunteer firefighters.
Lt. Keith Eisele, who actually started with the Gray Fire Department as a cadet, will head up the Explorer Post.
