Jones County chair Sheila Parker said the countywide effort yielded over $6,200 last year, and that placed them third in the state for volunteer departments. Parker said this year’s collection points would be the intersection between Ingles Supermarket and Flash Foods in Gray and Highway 49 and Joycliff Road.
She said the county department decided to start the collection last year when they found out from MDA that no one in the area would be collecting.
“We got the departments together, and they were ecstatic. We are doing it as a countywide effort,” she said.
Parker said, when they were in the road collecting last year on Highway 49, many people would stop to talk to them. The Gray Highway collection point in 2012 was at the Joycliff Road intersection, but the decision was made to move it to Gray.
“We will have a tent and fire trucks in the Ingles parking lot. We are more than happy to talk to people if they want to stop,” she said.
