The Jones County boys just missed qualifying for the state golf tournament, finishing ninth on Monday in the Class AAAAA state sectional at White Oak Golf Club in Newnan.

But Zach Haney, who shot a 79 to lead the Greyhounds, qualified as an individual for the Class AAAAA state tournament, which will be at Bartram Trail in Evans on May 19.

The Lady Hounds, who finished first in their region to earn an automatic berth, compete in the girls’ AAAAA state tournament this coming Monday at Jones Creek Golf Course in Augusta.

The low eight schools in the 17-team sectional field on Monday advanced to state. The Greyhounds shot 330, finishing just two shots behind eighth-place Flowery Branch.

“If we could have cut three strokes, we would have been going on to state,” coach Jeff Williams said. “But Zach did make it individually, though that was in doubt for a while.”

Haney finished in a tie for eighth, and only the top eight individuals whose teams did not qualify for state received invitations as individual competitors.
