The Greyhounds pose for a team picture after winning the Baldwin Brawls in Milledgeville this past Saturday. The wrestling team will have a home meet next Tuesday at 5 p.m.
The Baldwin meet was the first with a mostly complete squad as several team members who also play football were finally able to take part.
The Greyhound grapplers easily beat Greene County, Northside-Warner Robins, Georgia Military and Baldwin to get to the finals against Monticello, which has an outstanding program for a small school.
“They’re pretty tough. They swept us last year, but we won 36-35 to win the tournament,” coach Daniel Lewis said. “We were down 11 points with two weight classes to go and needed pins in both to overtake them, and that’s what we got.”
First, ninth-grader Gailey Faircloth, the team’s first female wrestler, won with a pin in the 220-pound division, then senior Jackson Williamson won with a pin in the 285-pound heavyweight match.
Also a guard on the football team, Williamson had not had a chance to practice but a couple of times before the meet.
