Jarquez Smith soars high to block a shot against Warner Robins during the region tournament hosted by Jones County. The senior had three triple-doubles in the tourney, averaging more than 10 points, 10 blocks and 10 rebounds a game.
They were to host Richmond Hill (11-16) at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in Gray in the opening round. A victory in that game would send the Greyhounds (17-10) on to the second round Saturday against the winner between Northside-Columbus (20-4) and Northgate (8-16) – in Columbus if Northside wins, at home if the foe is Northgate.
Jones County’s boys secured their first berth in the post-season since 2003 when they downed Evans 65-43 in the opening round of the Region 2-AAAAA Tournament, which the Greyhounds hosted, last Wednesday.
Then they guaranteed themselves of hosting a first-round game in state with a 73-68 victory over Warner Robins in the region semifinals on Friday.
They fell short of their goal of winning the region title with a 76-70 loss to Northside-Warner Robins in Saturday’s championship game, snapping a nine-game winning streak.
But as disappointed as coach Dennis Woolfolk was about his team’s performance in that game, he didn’t lose sight of what the Greyhounds have accomplished in only his second season as coach.
The long wait is over. For the first time in a decade, the Greyhounds have made it to the state basketball playoffs.
