But then, there is this – even with all the mistakes and sloppy play, Jones County did come out of its first region game with a victory last week, as coach Dwight Jones was quick to point out to his players last Friday.
“We can enjoy this one tonight because it was a win, no matter how ugly,” he told them immediately after the Greyhounds survived a late rally to down Greenbrier 20-14 in the Region 2-AAAAA opener for both at Greyhound Field.
“But we can’t celebrate long. We’ve got a short week before we play Warner Robins on Thursday, and you all know we’ve got to play a lot better than we did tonight.”
The Greyhounds visit Warner Robins Thursday night to take on the Demons, who are ranked No. 8 in the AJC poll and 10th in the AP rankings. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at McConnell-Talbert Stadium.
Both teams are 3-1 overall, having lost their second games of the season on the road to schools from lower classifications – Warner Robins to Peach County 29-24 and Jones County to Mary Persons 25-21. And both are 1-0 in the region after winning at home last week – Warner Robins downed Evans 34-6.
