After two turnovers in their opening win over Alcovy and three in a loss to Mary Persons in their second game, the Greyhounds had none last Friday night and rolled to a 50-20 win over Putnam County in their home opener to improve to 2-1. Putnam dropped to 2-2.
Senior halfback Undre Williams ran for four touchdowns and 140 yards on only 10 carries to lead the Jones County offense, helping the Greyhounds offset a 235-yard rushing effort on 34 carries by Putnam’s Ladarien Reeves.
The victory was also the 100th as a varsity coach for Jones County’s Dwight Jones, and his players celebrated by dousing him with ice water as time expired, and his assistant coaches presented him with a game ball commemorating the event.
“This isn’t about me,” Jones said of the 100th victory in his 21st season as a head coach. “I’ve been blessed to have a lot of good players and great assistant coaches through the years, and they’re the reason we could get here. My daddy used to tell me even a blind hog finds an acorn some of the time. You keep at it long enough and the wins come. But I don’t think Robert Davis (second on Georgia’s all-time victory list with 352 in 36 years) or Charlie Winslette (260 wins in 34 years) have anything to worry about. I learned a lot from both of them, but I don’t think I can hang around long enough to catch them.
