The Greyhound grapplers recorded their first region title in school history on Saturday when they went undefeated in the Region 2-AAAAA Duals they hosted at the Jones County High School gym.

They advance to the state duals, which open Thursday evening at the Macon Coliseum.

“We’ve finished second nine times, but we had never won it,” said coach Daniel Lewis, who started the wrestling program at Jones County 15 years ago. “We had come close so many times, so that makes it all that much sweeter to finally win it.”

The duals format is team competition in which schools field wrestlers in 14 weight classes in head-to-head competition against other schools. The cumulative scores are used to determine the team winner in each match.

After the duals season is finished this weekend, the wrestlers will continue to compete in individual matches. In that format, they advance in their weight class against wrestlers from the various schools entered in a meet. The region individual tournament will be Feb. 1-2 at Warner Robins, with the top finishers advancing to the sectionals Feb. 8-9 in Loganville and then on to the state finals, again in Macon, Feb. 14-16.

There are eight schools in Region 2-AAAAA, but Lakeside-Evans and Grovetown did not field teams this season, so the remaining six took part in Saturday’s tournament.
