Jones County’s Housing Committee members talked about the unexpected opposition to a proposed affordable house complex during a brief meeting April 25.

Chairman Donald Black stated that he was not prepared for the opposition to the James Street Village at the city’s committees meeting. He said he has received at least five calls inquiring about Section Eight Housing.

“What bothers me is the perception that the apartments are going to be Section Eight. We didn’t get any of this when it was proposed a year ago, and it’s the same project,” Black said.

Homeowners spoke at the city committee meeting April 21 with concerns about their property value being decreased by the development and that the crime rate in the neighborhood would increase.

The James Street Village project is proposed by Peachtree Housing Communities, and the company sent a letter to city council members dated April 25 in regard to the development.
