Jackson was presented with the award, which is known as the Stetson F. Bennett award, April 30, at the King and Prince Beach and Golf Resort on St. Simons Island.
The clerk said he was surprised with the award and with the fact that his family and State Reps. Susan Holmes and Bubber Epps were at the awards banquet without his knowledge.
Jackson said, after his name was announced as the winner, a light came on so he could see his father, children, grandchildren, and Holmes and Epps at the banquet.
“I was honored and a little overwhelmed,” he said. “It meant so much to me that they would take their time to go down there.”
