The Jones County varsity basketball teams opened their seasons with a pair of lopsided losses to Veterans High early last week, but the boys and girls played better in their second games against Baldwin on Friday.

The Greyhounds rebounded from their 73-59 home loss to Veterans to down Baldwin 75-73 in overtime, also at home.

The Lady Hounds lost both games, falling to Veterans 56-36, but they played much tougher against Baldwin, losing 56-53.

The teams were to host Dodge County on Tuesday before hitting the road for the first time with a trip to play Georgia Military in Milledgeville on Friday. The girls play at 7 p.m., followed by the boys. Those games were originally scheduled for Saturday afternoon but were moved.

Both the girls and boys found it tough to score in their opening games last Tuesday.

“Our big problem was turnovers,” coach Lance Pittman said of the Lady Hounds’ loss to Veterans. “We’re inexperienced at point guard, but we’ll get better.”
