Official softball, cross country and cheerleading practices can open Aug. 1.
But in fact, the Jones County football, softball and cross country teams have been having conditioning sessions most of the summer, but those workouts are voluntary.
Now come the mandatory practices – providing the weather permits.
After two Georgia high school football players died from heat related causes during the preseason last year, the Georgia High School Association adopted new measures regulating when and how long sports teams may practice.
Football teams must now use an instrument that measures the wet bulb globe temperature reading during practices, and the reading determines the length and intensity of practice sessions.
