More than three dozen youngsters took part in the first JCHS youth soccer camp held this week at the Jones County Government Center fields.

JCHS boys soccer coach Duane Kitchens conducted the camp, along with the school’s soccer booster club. Members of the varsity boys and girls teams helped with the coaching.

“It was a really good turnout. I was only expecting 15 or so for the first time, so I was really pleased,” he said.

Kitchens, who just finished his first season at Jones County, said exposing the kids to the program in the camp is important to encourage more participation in soccer when they get to high school.

“It takes a while to build a successful program, and you have to get the kids started when they are young. Hopefully we’ll be seeing some of these coming out for soccer in school in a few years,” Kitchens said.
