The Jones County Lady Hounds placed third in the Region 2-AAAAA tennis tournament last Wednesday at the John Drew Smith Tennis Center in Macon to qualify for the state playoffs.

They were to visit Effingham County, the No. 2 team from Region 3-AAAAA, in the opening round at 2 p.m. on Wednesday.

“The girls have worked hard and played really well this season, so we’re excited to get to go to state,” coach Alisha Gordon said.

The winner of Wednesday’s match advances to play the Starr’s Mill-Harris County winner in the second round, which must be played by April 30. The schools advancing will decide on a day and time, with the higher seed hosting. Starr’s Mill is the top seed from Region 4-AAAAA, and Harris County is the fourth seed from Region 1-AAAAA.

The Lady Hounds defeated Evans in the first round of the region tournament, lost to Greenbrier in the second round and defeated Houston County in the third-place match.
