The Jones County girls are struggling.

Lance Pittman’s Lady Hounds opened the second half of the season with a pair of 20-point losses last weekend, losing a non-region home game against Veterans 46-25 on Friday and their region opener at Houston County 55-35 on Saturday, falling to 4-9.

“That’s not the start we wanted in the region,” Pittman said. “It’s frustrating. We’re young this year, and some of the young girls just aren’t responding to our coaching and getting better. But we’ll keep working and trying to get better.”

Sophomore Adora Chatfield and freshman Krystal Wimberly, who have been inconsistent when pushed into the varsity lineup, have been relegated to the junior varsity for the time being to gain more experience.

“That leaves us with only nine girls on varsity. There are a couple more girls on JV who have the skills to play varsity, but they just haven’t shown they are coachable enough yet to move them up,” Pittman said.

The Lady Hounds trailed by only a point at halftime against Veterans on Friday, but they were outscored 23-9 in the third period and 10-4 in the fourth when the Lady War Hawks began pressing.
