The second of two meetings about the merger of some of Jones County’s voting precincts could not have been more different than the first.

County Commissioners met July 30 at the Tri-Community fire station on Greene Settlement Road to talk to voters in the White Precinct in Round Oak. The commissioners met with voters at the Juliette fire station the week before and walked into the room filled with citizens unhappy at the prospect of closing their precinct.

Four people from the White Precinct attended last week’s meeting, and the consensus of the group was the consolidation of White and Barron precincts is a good idea.

County officials actually outnumbered the people from the White Precinct with four of Jones County’s five commissioners, County Administrator Mike Underwood, and elections superintendent Marion Hatton in attendance.

Commission Chairman Preston Hawkins opened the meeting and then asked Hatton to speak.

She stated that the merger of the precincts is part of an effort to save taxpayer money. She said the move to consolidate smaller precincts is being done statewide, and it works.
