She received her early education in the Jones County Public School System.
On Aug. 29, 1931, she was united in marriage to the late William Alonza Black. Five children were born to this union: the late William Carl and Herman Eugene Black, Jimmie B. Pitts, Geraldine M. Thomas, Donald Black, and adopted son Dr. Michael Iteogu; three daughters-in-law, Dr. Shirley Black, Mrs. Dorothy W. Black, and Mrs. Ezinwanne Iteogu; one son-in-law, Eddie Thomas; a brother, Lewis Whidby of Detroit, Mich.; and a beloved niece, Mildred Kitchens. She has 17 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren, nine first cousins, and many nieces, nephews, and spiritually connected children and friends.
