Upon arrival to the intersection of Highway 18 East and Morton Road, the school bus turned out to be a van belonging to Children’s Friend Learning Center, and the best news was no serious injuries were sustained by the seven children in the van nor the three drivers involved.
The yellow van looks like a short school bus, and it was overturned on a Ford Explorer, driven by Rachel Williams. The Explorer was stopped at the south side stop sign on Morton Road when the accident occurred.
According to a report of the accident by Sheriff’s Department Deputy Chance Rogers, the van driven by Anitra Alexander was on the north side of Morton Road and pulled in front of a Chevrolet Silverado driven by Thomas Adkisson. The pickup truck struck the side of the van, causing it to tip over onto the Explorer.
The accident report indicates Alexander was cited for failure to yield right away.
Jones County’s Assistant Emergency Management Director Bill Wright was one of the first to arrive on the scene following the collision. He credited the use of seat belts in the van for the lack of serious injuries. He said every child was in a seat belt.
