But they both came back in the consolation bracket on Saturday morning to place in state. Randolph won twice in the 106-pound division to finish third, and Williamson overcame a pin in his first match Saturday to pin his foe in his final high school match later Saturday to place fifth in the 285-pound division.
The Greyhounds’ other two state qualifiers, sophomore Scott Rooks and freshman Daniel Curry, were eliminated in their first consolation bracket matches Friday morning.
“I’m really proud of the way Tim and Jackson finished,” Jones County coach Daniel Lewis said. “I really thought they both had a chance to make it to the final, so having both go down in the semifinals is disappointing, but they had great seasons.
“It’s the first time since 2005 we’ve had multiple guys place at state. That year we had three,” he added. “But having two this year, plus two more who made it to state and five more who came within a match of advancing to state in the sectionals, that should make us excited about next season. We only graduate two, so we have starters back in 12 of the 14 weight classes, including three who were at state and five more in the sectional.”
