Randolph, Williamson win state openers

Jones County wrestlers Tim Randolph and Jackson Williamson won their opening matches, both with pins in the first period, Thursday night in the first round of the state class AAAAA individual tournament at the Macon Coliseum.

The Greyhounds' other two qualifiers, Daniel Curry and Scott Rooks, lost, however, and will drop into the consolation bracket where one more loss will eliminate them.

Randolph and Williamson were both first seeds wrestling eighth seeds, and Curry and Rooks were eighth seeds wrestling first seeds.

Randolph, now 54-2 on the season, defeated Tyler Lu, 29-13, of Dunwoody in the 106-pound division. Williamson, 51-1, pinned Blayton Howard, 24-20, of East Paulding in the 285-pound division.

The two Jones County wrestlers advance to the quarterfinals, to be held between 9 and 11 a.m. Friday. If they win there, they move on to the semifinals beginning at 7 p.m. The championship matches are set to begin at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Curry, 36-24, was pinned in the first period of the 182-pound match by Allatoona's Cody Webb, 34-5. Rooks lost a 9-1 decision to Whitewater's Dylan Davis, 25-9, at 220 pounds.

Curry and Rooks wrestle in the consolation round Thursday, beginning at 11 a.m.
