The new branch manager for the Jones County Library is excited about the first summer reading program under her leadership.

The summer kickoff event will take place June 2 at the Jones County Library in conjunction with a Community Health Fair (see details Page A6) hosted by Peach State Health Plan, Jones County Family Connection, and Right From the Start Medicaid.

Leisl Hammond took over as branch manager following the January retirement of Vicki Helton. Helton had worked at the facility for 24 years, and had been the manager of the library since 2011.

Hammond has lived in Jones County for seven years and worked as a parapro at Dames Ferry Elementary before coming to the library. She is married to Andrew Hammond, who is the manager of Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge. The couple has two sons who attend Jones County schools, and the family is originally from Louisiana.

She said working as a parapro was a good fit when her children were younger, but she was ready to try something new when the branch manager position became available.

“I’ve always enjoyed reading, and I worked in my college library after I graduated,” Hammond said.
