A discussion about the recognition of honor students was one of the high points of this month’s Board of Education meeting.

Superintendent William Mathews gave his report first at the Aug. 13 meeting and announced an award received by Mattie Wells from the Georgia Board of Education recognizing that the school served breakfast to 63 percent of their students during the 2013 school year.

Mathews congratulated the school and noted that school nutrition departments had to deal with a lot of outside forces over the past year.

The superintendent’s finance report was brief, marking the 8 percent mark for the school year. He said the school system is in improved financial shape and was able to release some supply money that in the past had to wait until property tax money was received.

He said no major changes are expected. Mathews did mention that sales tax receipts have been down for the past couple of months. He said the project of building the new elementary school is solid, but continued declines could put future projects in jeopardy.
