A Jones County teenager not only missed his high school graduation but will also spend five years on probation and time in a state probation detention center for entering the home of a friend without permission and taking a shotgun.

Preston Skylar DuPree was in Jones County Superior Court Sept. 24, and, in addition to probation, he was also sentenced to remain in the Jones County Law Enforcement Center until space is available at a state probation detention center, where he will serve 90 to 120 days.

The charge for which he was sentenced was burglary. DuPree was arrested May 19 and the crime took place around noon that same day. In an article about the burglary in The Jones County News, Capt. Leo Sweet with the Gray Police Department said a 20-year-old female was at home at the time of the burglary and heard the front door open. No one was supposed to be home.

DuPree was a friend of the homeowner’s son and helped himself to the spare key hidden outside. He entered the residence, went to the spare bedroom, and took a Mossberg 12-gauge shotgun. He put the key back where he found it and left.

The witness was able see out enough to recognize the intruder and saw him with the shotgun. She remained hidden and called her brother.
