Ashley Thomas and Edregas O’Neal have advanced to the state track meets for Jones County after placing in the top eight in their events at the state sectional held at Loganville High School last Saturday.

Thomas qualified in two events by finishing seventh in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.6 seconds and eighth in the long jump with a leap of 16 feet, 5.75 inches.

It is the second year in a row the Lady Hounds have had a qualifier in the 100 hurdles. Victoria Dumas, who earned a college scholarship with Jacksonville State University, qualified in both the 100 and 300 hurdles last year, and went on to place second in the state in the 300 hurdles.

O’Neal qualified in the shot put by finishing seventh in the sectional with a toss of 45 feet, 8 inches. No Greyhounds advanced to state last year.

The girls’ state track meet will be Thursday through Saturday at Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany. The Class AAAAA long jump competition is scheduled to begin Friday at 1:30 p.m., and the 100 hurdles preliminaries follow at 5 p.m. The 100 hurdles finals are set to start Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

The boys’ state track meet will be May 8-10 at Memorial Stadium in Jefferson. The Class AAAAA shot put competition is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 8.
