Board of Education maintenance and facilities director Ken Barnes brought plans for the new Gray Elementary School that is scheduled to be constructed on Highway 18 East next to the Jones County Lions Club fairgrounds. Construction on the school will begin later this year.
City superintendent Russ Dorman, water committee chairman Councilman Benny Gray, Mayor Pro Tem Loretta Lipsey, and Councilman Terrell Fulford attended the July 10 meeting to look at the plans and talk to Barnes.
Dorman said he has studied the plans, and the council has two issues to consider. He said the school system has asked permission to run waterlines on the city right of way near Nature’s Walk and install a forced main.
The second issue is setting water and sewer tap fees for the project.
“Nowhere in the city’s ordinance does it tell how to calculate fees for lines this size,” Dorman said.
