Ike Liston joined the Navy in 1951 and spent most of his service attached to a Marine Corps hospital.
Jones County’s Veterans Committee is preparing for the 10th annual Veterans Appreciation Day with this year’s theme ‘Citizen soldiers – America’s strength’.

The celebration is scheduled for Nov. 5 at the W.E. Knox Civic Center and will include the dedication of the completed redesign and landscaping surrounding the building. The thruway in front of the civic center will also be officially named Veterans Walk in honor of the annual parade of veterans that takes place each year prior to the annual program.

Dr. Robert Cramer, one of the charter members of the committee and a veteran, died in September and will be honored during this year’s program.

For the first eight years of the celebration, speakers were brought in to anchor the program. In 2008, in addition to a keynote speaker, four local veterans were interviewed and videoed. Those interviews were played as part of the program and were so well received that in 2009 and each year since, the interviews have become the program’s main event.

Veterans Appreciation Day was the idea of former Jones County/Gray Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Sandra McKinney.
