Superintendent William Mathews began the meeting talking about the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) accreditation process. He stated that the process involves everything about the school system.
He said the preparation team met twice as a group and the process includes a lot of detailed work.
“We know what we do and this documents it. This tells us who we are and what we are about,” Mathews said.
School Improvement Director Estelle Jacobs said the preparation team is a mixture of staff and support and really started work in August. She said every document in the process has a cascade affect with other departments and schools and creates a continuous cycle.
“I think we are learning more about the system and our goals to a depth we may have not seen before. Sometimes we can get involved in our own work and not see the big picture,” she said.
The SACS evaluation team will come in March. Jacobs said the effort to improve education should not end when the SACS team leaves. She the team’s leaving should start a process of continued improvement to last until the next SACS team arrives in five years.
