City council members looked over two redistricting plans at a called meeting Monday. The plans were reprinted by the MGRC Friday but presented no new information.
Three city councilmen went to the Middle Georgia Regional Commission office Sept. 21 to work on Gray’s voting districts that are way out of the 10 percent allowed deviation.
The closest of the three plans is out more than 40 percent, and two of the three councilmen are OK with the deviation.
Senior government services specialist Nick Kouloungis told the councilmen that, so far, they had three plans, which were created in March, and none of them meet the criteria.
The March visit was the second for the city officials.
Kouloungis said the first goal is to create districts with populations within a 10 percent deviation, meaning that 5 percent over or under is acceptable. The second goal is to maintain the minority majority districts and Gray had two, District 1 and District 2.
“Because of the population shift of the 2010 census, the only minority majority district is number two. You are way outside of deviation. The idea is to get it down as close as possible,” he said.
