As the Nov. 6 election approaches, it is time for Jones Countians to take a good look at the candidates vying to represent them on the local level. This week’s focus is on the race for chairman of the Board of Commissioners.

The candidates are incumbent Preston Hawkins, who is running as a Republican, and challenger Chuck Baker, who is running as a Democrat.

Next week will feature the candidates from the only other local contested race, Commission District Four. Incumbent Commissioner Bert Liston is being challenged for his seat by Daylon Martin.

Jones County will have a candidate forum sponsored by the Gray/Jones County Chamber of Commerce and The Jones County News Oct. 15 at the W.E. Knox Center. All local and state candidates have been invited to attend and will take questions submitted by audience members.

More important dates to remember for the election are Oct. 9, which is the last day to register to vote in the November election, and Oct. 15, the first day of Early Voting. Early voting is held at the Jones County Elections office located in the Government Center. Voting hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
