Kylie Bass was slinging strikes and the Lady Hounds were putting the ball in play and challenging the base paths last week as they swept Glynn Academy 7-2 and 1-0 in the opening round of the state softball playoffs.

With the doubleheader sweep at home last Wednesday, the third game on Thursday in the best-of-three series was not necessary.

Now they get the chance to try to do the same again, but the foe figures to be a bit tougher.

Jones County (18-16-1) hosts Whitewater (22-10-1) in the second round in another best-of-three series. The first two games were to be played Wednesday, beginning at 5:30 p.m. The third game, if needed, will be on Thursday, also in Gray.

Whitewater, the fourth seed from Region 4-AAAAA, advanced by sweeping 1-AAAAA top seed Thomas County Central (19-12-1) last Wednesday in Thomasville 7-2 and 9-0.

“That’s a tough region,” Jones County coach Blake Lyons said of Whitewater’s 4-AAAAA. He should know; the Lady Hounds were in a region with many of the same schools the last two seasons.
