All four candidates in Jones County’s two contested races attended the Oct. 15 forum. Incumbent County Commission Chairman Preston Hawkins (R) and challenger Chuck Baker (D), and District Four incumbent Bert Liston (R) and challenger Daylon Martin (D), answered audience questions for 90 minutes with State Senate District 25 candidates Burt Jones (R) and Darrell Black (D), Senate District 26 candidate Bobby Gale (R), and House District 44 incumbent Bubber Epps (R).
The only no shows at Jones County’s Candidates Forum were Democratic candidates David Lucas, who is running for Senate District 26, and Mary Ann Whipple-Leu, running for House District 144.
The forum was sponsored by the Jones County/Gray Chamber of Commerce and The Jones County News. Greg Mullis served as moderator for the event.
The first speaker was Board of Education Chairman Ginger Bailey, who talked about Constitutional Amendment 1 on the Nov. 6 ballot. She said she is an advocate for all students and the amendment decides who approves charter schools.
