Hunton Morgan and Noel Smith are both in incredibly good shape and have families who take great pride in their service to their country. The veterans share their branch of service with one flying planes and the other serving as a gunner.
Hunton Morgan will turn 90 Dec. 14, a week after this year’s observance of Pearl Harbor Day. Morgan is a decorated veteran of both WWII and the Korean War and currently lives in Jones County with his daughter.
The veteran grew up in Macon and joined the Army Air Corps, the predecessor of the U.S. Air Force, in November of 1942 after he graduated from high school. Morgan said America’s entry into the war, following the Japanese attack and the draft, was the reason he joined the military.
He was 19 when he enlisted and was sent to Keesler Field in Mississippi for basic training and then airplane mechanics school. His next stop was aerial gunner school in Arlington, Texas.
