The Jones County Youth Football League Mite all-stars finished second in the Georgia Parks and Recreation Association state playoffs last weekend in Thomson.

The 9-10 year old Hounds defeated Bartow County 30-6 in Saturday’s semifinal game, then lost 14-6 to Calhoun County in the championship game on Sunday due to Calhoun’s power running attack.

“You have to give credit to the Calhoun team. They executed well,” Jones County coach Jamey Huckeba said. “You don’t find many recreation teams that are committed to running the ball inside. That was something that we had not seen the entire all-star season. They blocked through the whistle on every play.

“We did not execute as well as I would have liked, and we had too many penalties, but the boys played hard and this was a tough loss. Of course, the coaches are wondering what we could have done different,” he added.

“Two years ago this group went undefeated and won the Gray Bowl, district and state championship. This year we won the district and were state runner-up. We have not faced a team that just had more talent than we did. We have a great league and we have good players in our league that did not make all-stars. I am really proud of these guys, and it was my privilege to be their coach.”
