Capt. Billy Mitchell, who is over the patrol division of the Jones County Sheriff’s Department, said although the number is low, he will not say any number of fatalities is good.
Mitchell said his goal is to educate the public as much as possible to try to get that number to zero. All three of this year’s fatal accidents occurred on Highway 49, and that fact was not lost on Mitchell. Two of the three accidents involved multiple vehicles.
“We are patrolling Highway 49 hard,” he stated. “There is no doubt it’s a hazardous road with congested areas, hills and curves.”
Mitchell said he has four suggestions for motorists to help keep them safe. He advised them to wear their seat belts, drive the speed limit, be observant of school bus traffic, and, of course, do not drive while under the influence of alcohol or any type of medication.
