Jones County’s 2013 newly re-elected Board of Education and Board of Commission members were sworn into office last week at a brief ceremony that included family members and friends.

In what is perhaps a first for Jones County, a father and son were among those given the oath of office Jan. 3 by Probate Judge Mike Greene, namely Board of Education District Two representative Alfred Pitts and Board of Commission District Two representative Jonathan Pitts.

Alfred Pitts and Board of Education District Four representative Mark Andrews were elected without opposition this past November in the first election for the board members since their offices were changed to non-partisan by the 2012 Georgia General Assembly.

Jonathan Pitts was elected to represent Commission District Two in the July 31 primary election. He was opposed by former Commissioner David Gault. Both candidates ran as Democrats and had no Republican opposition in November.

District Four Commissioner Daylon Martin was also sworn into office. He defeated former Commissioner Bert Liston, who ran as a Republican in the November election. Liston had served the county for two terms.

Pitts said it was a great experience to be sworn into office with his dad. He said with all the family there taking pictures, he felt like a rock star.
