Mrs. Hampton was born Feb. 23, 1915, in Mouth of Wilson, Va., and had lived in Gray for the past seven years. She was the daughter of the late Eugene Isom Phipps and Verna Gentry Phipps. Mrs. Hampton was a member of Cox’s Chapel United Methodist Church in Grayson County, Va., where she was also a member of Cox’s Chapel Grange. Mrs. Hampton was a member of the Senior Citizen’s Group of Independence, Va., and a retired teacher. She was preceded in death by a son, Carlgene Hampton; daughter, Sylvia Jane; brother, Eugene Phipps; sister, Ailene Phipps; grandson, Frederick Joseph Hampton; and by her former spouse, Reid Hampton.
Mrs. Hampton is survived by her daughters, Reeda Rimmer of Salisbury, N.C., and Anita Carter of Boone, N.C.; son and daughter-in-law, Nolan and Jane Hampton of Cleveland, N.C.; daughter-in-law, Mary Ann Hampton of Gray; sister-in-law, Emma Phipps of Mouth of Wilson, Va.; eight grandchildren; and by six great-grandchildren.
