Two members of the Jones County football team have signed full scholarships to play in college next season.

Offensive guard Jackson Williamson signed with Charleston Southern University of Charleston, S.C., and linebacker Doug West signed with Arizona Western College of Yuma, Ariz., on Wednesday morning, the first day recruits could sign scholarships.

Charleston Southern is a NCAA Division I FBC four-year program. The Buccaneers were 5-6 last season and have a new coach, Jamey Chadwell.

“They tell me they want me to play center and be a long snapper (for kicks and punts),” Williamson said. “I’m really excited.”

West said he is also excited for his chance to play at Arizona Western, a junior college coached by Tom Minnick, and hopes he’ll have the chance to transfer to a four-year school in a year or two. The Matadors were 8-2 last season.

West played defensive end and outside linebacker for the Greyhounds, but he will be at outside linebacker in college.

Jones County coach Dwight Jones said two more of his senior players are still being recruited – running back Undre Williams and center Thomas Rowan – and both may have a chance to sign later.

Check next week’s edition for a full story on the signings.
