The James T. Stone Friend of Education Award was created in 2010 when Stone retired from the Board of Education after 33 years of service. Stone was the first recipient. His and the names of all future recipients are placed on a plaque on display at the board office.
The 2013 recipients were Linton Jordan, Marie Collins, and The Jones County News. Jordan worked in the Jones County School System from 1969 to 1992. He began as a coach and retired as school superintendent. Collins served Jones County Schools for 44 years and worked as Jordan’s secretary and right hand for many of those years.
Collins’ award was accepted by her daughter, Janet Brooks.
Publisher Josh Lurie and Managing Editor Debbie Lurie-Smith accepted the award for The Jones County News.
