Auditor David Irwin of the firm of Mauldin and Jenkins presented the audit report to board members at their March 21 meeting. He began by stating the county had a clean audit.
“That is what you want,” he said.
Irwin added that the county’s financial department is top-notch, and LaVita Crutchfield and staff are a joy to work with.
“They are receptive to change, and we don’t get that a lot,” he commented.
The auditor gave a quick overview of accounts and said the General Fund balance is strong. He said the purpose of audit recommendations to the county are to make sure everything is property reported.
Irwin noted one issue is segregation of duties for financial accounts. He explained the staff members reconciling the accounts should not be the same people who maintain them.
“You need different people reporting and balancing statements. This is a common occurrence in small government offices,” he stated.
