The Jones County girls finished fourth in the Region 2-AAAAA track meet last week at Grovetown High near Augusta, and 10 Lady Hounds qualified for the state sectional to be held Saturday, also at Grovetown.

Senior Victoria Dumas led the charge, winning the 100 and 300 hurdles, finishing fourth in the long jump and being part of the Lady Hounds’ third place 4-by-100 and second place 4-by-400 relay teams, which qualified her for five events in the sectional.

The Jones County boys didn’t fare as well, finishing last in the eight-school meet, and none of the Greyhounds qualified for the sectional, though several came close.

“We had 10 girls qualify for sectional, scored 100 points and broke four school records, but we could only finish fourth as a team. That tells you how strong the top teams in our region are,” said Lady Hounds coach Geoff Moore. “We just need a little more depth.

“Dumas was outstanding, and we had several others who had their best performances of the season,” he added. “Hopefully we can keep it going in the sectional.”
