State Bank and Trust Company is sponsoring Ashley’s performance at the Relay, and Durden competed and won the Star of Gray contest for the opportunity to be his opening act.
According to information found on Ashley’s website, he was a finalist on season four of Nashville Star, where he set himself apart from a sea of 30,000 hopefuls. He has been named one of the top acts on the SEC college circuit, and has been recognized as the Regional Act of the Year winner and Country Male Artist of the Year nominee at The Georgia Country Music Awards.
Ten contestants competed March 16 to open for Ashley. The Star of Gray contest was the idea of LeAnne Weathers, State Bank assistant vice president and the assistant branch manager for Gray.
Weathers is a member of the bank’s Relay team, and she is the chairman of the entertainment committee. She said she went to corporate and asked if they would donate the money to get Ashley to come and perform at the Relay For Life, and they said yes.
