The Clifton Ridge Cougars downed Upson-Lee 2-0 on the road last Friday in the first round of the Middle Georgia Middle School League baseball playoffs.

The Cougars were to visit Monroe County Tuesday evening for the championship game. Monroe eliminated Gray Station 11-7 in Gray on Friday to advance.

Clifton Ridge entered the playoffs as the No. 4 seed, but Bradley Hunnicutt pitched a complete-game shutout for the Cougars, who combined stellar defense and some timely hitting to secure the victory over top-seeded Upson, coach Daniel Wright reported.

The Cougars snapped a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth. Dawson Grimes led off with a double and scored when the pitcher made a bad throw to third on Cole Maddox’s sacrifice bunt.

Clifton Ridge added a run in the sixth when Hunnicutt led off with a double and moved to third on a ground out by Grimes. Hunnicutt scored when the shortstop made a bad throw to first after fielding Austin Moss’ two-out grounder.
