There might not be this much gold in Fort Knox.

The Jones County youth track athletes hauled home an armored truckload of gold medals from the Georgia Parks and Recreation state track meet last weekend in Carrollton.

Sixteen members of the team won state titles for Jones County, with eight of them finishing first in multiple events.

The 7-8 year old and 13-14 year old girls swept the 4-by-100 and 4-by-400 relay titles to lead the parade, and Alicia Thomas, who was on the 13-14 relay teams, also won the 400-meter dash to bring home a team-best three state titles.

It was almost enough to leave coach Valvin Hambrick speechless.

Well, not really.

“To have 16 kids who are state champs – the most we have had since the program started in 2007. It is incredible,” Hambrick said.

The most previously for the team was nine, he said.

“At the beginning of the season, I told the parents this was going to be our most successful year yet. The theory became true with us producing 16 kids into state champions,” Hambrick said.
